“It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.”
— John Steinbeck
DREAM INCUBATION is a technique used to consciously induce dreams that present solutions to problems, reveal means to achieve goals, and answer personally meaningful questions. By meditating on your subject of choice and creating a question to repeat in your mind as you fall asleep, you receive dreams that answer your question and strongly contribute to the resolution or achievement of your objective. Dreams can open your heart and mind to new worlds of possibility, bring about great personal satisfaction, and serve as a virtually limitless source of creative inspiration.
In my work, I seek to document the insight and answers I receive from my dreams — whether they are incubated dreams, lucid dreams, spontaneous dreams, or otherwise. My paintings capture the imagery and emotional sensations from these deeply subjective experiences in order to fully realize the wisdom contained within them.
Dreams are powerful narratives and primarily visual experiences, rife with symbols and elements chosen by the subconscious. To compose these paintings, I document my dreams every morning and select the ones with the strongest visual moments or symbols. I then create collages to recreate the visual feel and emotional content of the dream to paint from. In addition to paintings, I create one-page comics for dreams that have a strong sequential nature. Together, these paintings and comics document my process of self actualization: they are my subconscious chronicles.
